Dear Friend,

Family members and friends met the second Saturday of April at Long Creek Cemetery for their annual spring workday. Much was accomplished in preparing Long Creek for the summer mowing season. The second Saturday of each April has been set for annual meetings at Long Creek and all family members are encouraged to attend. This is a way to show respect to our forefathers and teach our children about their heritage.

There are 23 veterans interred at Long Creek Cemetery in land Between the Lakes. Fourteen of these veterans served during World War II. It was suggested the veterans be honored with a memorial marker listing each name of the veterans to be erected with donations from family members and friends of Long Creek Cemetery. As other veterans are interred at Long Creek, their names could be added to the memorial marker. We discovered 14 Civil War veterans in one cemetery is a very high number for Trigg County.

The veterans’ names who participated in the Civil War are George W. Ahart, Joseph Ahart, William Jackson Atwood, Lynn B. Bell, Richard Miller Choate, Sr., Starkie Sanders Colson, George Washington Duncan, Andrew Jackson Franklin, William G. Gordon, Moses McWaters, Jacob Francis Nunn, John William Nunn, Francis Marion Oakley, and James D. Wood. Those veterans serving their country during World War I are Joseph Francis Ahart, Robert Jesse Forguson, Samuel J. Hargrove, Herbert Putman Cothran and William Guthrie Ahart. The veterans serving their country during World War II are Harry Bennett, and Seldon Thomas Colson. John E. Smith and Forest Leroy Oakley are also veterans who served their country.

You are receiving this letter because we thought you might want to have the opportunity to be a part of erecting the Veterans Memorial for your ancestor. Donations may be sent to Vickey Lane, 516 Malone Road, Cadiz, KY 42211 with a notation for the Veterans Memorial at Long Creek Cemetery. When the Veterans Memorial is set, there will be an unveiling. If you have questions about Civil War Veterans, you may call me at 270-522-8316.
