The Trigg County Lady Wildcats failed to protect a fourth-quarter lead during Friday’s 52-49 loss to Lyon County.

The defeat extended Trigg’s losing streak to four games, including a 65-58 overtime loss Thursday against Hopkins County Central and a 78-53 loss last Tuesday at Webster County.

Trigg (3-4, 1-2 in 5th District) trailed by as many as seven points late in the second quarter but overtook the lead at 37-36 on a three-pointer by Khadijah Grubbs late in the third. The Lady ‘Cats pushed the lead to four and played the waiting game early in the fourth, with Alyssa Maxey dribbling the clock down. But the tactic backfired as Trigg struggled to control the ball late.

“We need to take better care of the basketball, especially in pressure situations,” Trigg head coach Amy Breckel said. “It was our game to win, and we let it slip through our fingers. When we’re in a position to win, we’ve got to finish out the game.”

Trigg had a one-point lead heading to the free throw line with 20 seconds left in the game but couldn’t capitalize. Lyon’s Jill P’Poole sank two foul shots with 13.3 seconds left and capped the game with a steal and layup.
