Funeral services for Don Shemwell, 73, of Cadiz, were held Friday, December 30, 2011 at Locust Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. John Hagan officiated. Burial followed with military honors in the East End Cemetery in Cadiz. Goodwin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Shemwell died of natural causes at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at his residence in Cadiz.

He was born December 10, 1938 in Trigg County to the late Lester Morris and Ruby Pearl Campbell Shemwell.

Mr. Shemwell was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church and formerly served as church treasurer. He began his banking career as a teller at Trigg County Farmers Bank in Cadiz, where he served for 25 years, resigning as Executive Vice President. He served as President of Cadiz-Trigg County Golf Club, Chairman of Trigg County Summer Recreation Program, organizer and founding corporate secretary of Cadiz-Trigg County Medical Arts Center. He retired from Farmers National Bank (now Community Trust Bank) in Williamsburg as president, CEO and director. While there he served as president of the Rotary Club and advisory trustee of Cumberland College (now University of The Cumberlands). He was also a United States Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam era.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Rudy Shemwell; and one daughter, Kathryn Shemwell.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Frances Blandford Shemwell of Cadiz; three brothers, Bobby Shemwell of Caledonia, David Shemwell of Henderson and Darrell Shemwell of Wadesville, Ind.; three sisters, Glenda Williams of Bowling Green, Charlotte Lamb of Princeton and Sharon Pyle of Bowling Green; one daughter, Karen Arni (and husband Rick) of Marshall, Mo.; four grandchildren, Heidi Arni, Ryan Arni, Kaleb Brashears and Logan Brashears; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Kaleb Brashears, Logan Brashears, David Shemwell, Bobby Shemwell, Darrell Shemwell and JP. Shemwell. Honorary pallbearers were the Locust Grove Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School Class, Bob Winstead, Bob Sholar, Bob Rose, Kelly Sholar, Don Moore, Ramon Oliver, Doug Taylor, Harold Meredith, Rodney Bleidt, H.B. Randolph and Bill H. Sumner. Music was provided by Locust Grove Baptist Church Choir, Peggy Hargis, pianist, and Jim Bob Outland, vocalist.
