At approximately 8 p.m. Thursday, the Delta Mariner cargo ship collided with the Eggner Ferry Bridge, leaving a 322-foot gap on the eastern side of the structure. Four vehicles were on the bridge at the time, but none on the bridge or the boat were injured.
The United States Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting an investigation.
The highway has been closed to traffic at Ky. 453/The Trace near the Land Between the Lakes Golden Pond Welcome Station. State police have warned that citizens found spectating on the bridge itself will face criminal charges. Keith Todd of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said he was informed by the Coast Guard that a couple hundred individuals were on the western portion of the bridge this weekend.
Kentucky State Police Post 1 Trooper Dean Patterson said KSP has been trying to be “as cordial as possible” to sightseers and that, as far as he knows, KSP hasn’t issued many citations.
