EDDYVILLE – Trigg County High School’s baseball and softball seasons ended Monday in the first round of the 5th District Tournament.

The Lady Wildcats opened the night with a 15-0 loss to top-seeded Livingston Central, while the Wildcats, also playing Livingston, lost 5-0.

The Lady Wildcats couldn’t contain the Lady Cardinals’ solid offensive attack and failed to mount any challenge at the plate. Trigg, which won its season finale Thursday against Russellville, has played several weeks without senior leader Brianna Messmer, who suffered an ankle injury.

“That was a huge factor in our season,” head coach Lacey Briscoe said. “Not only was she our starting catcher, but she was one of our best hitters. And it took a lot of leadership off the field.”

Trigg’s youth was a continued theme this season – Messmer was one of three seniors along with Sierra Bush and Shanease Byers. The team at many times fielded only two high school players with the rest middle schoolers.

“We’ve had to move everybody around, and some girls stepped up and filled multiple positions,” Briscoe said.
