“What happened was that it came out of our maintenance [budget],” said Jan Bush, media contact for the LBL National Recreation Area. “Our maintenance budget was reduced by 50 percent, so that’s $850,000 is what it was reduced by, and that goes to road maintenance, picnic tables, porta potties … it’s everything.”
There was a survey on the LBL web site at www.lbl.org, under Alerts & Notices, wherein LBL officials asked members of the public to review some potential options. The survey was available until Monday, May 21, and the information gathered is still available on the site. Bush said they received more than 200 responses.
Officials also hosted four public hearings in recent weeks, where they also got additional public input, in areas in and around LBL.
“What we’re doing with going out and talking to people is to say, ‘Do you have any ideas of ways we could actually … reduce our costs or increase revenue, or are there some services that we don’t need to do anymore,’” said Bush. “We actually got some good ideas … we were kind of impressed.”
