It’s the last day of July.
My old Buddy, Steve Guess
Turns fifty-three.
Tell me, if you will,
Just how that can be?
What happened to
yesterday?
Where did your youth go?
You see, I can answer that
Because I am one that would know.
You lived on Sunset Circle
At the end of Glendale Drive.
Your old phone number is engrained
In my memory – 8565.
You played every sport
That we had back then.
I should know because
I was your teammate and friend.
You entered high school and
They nicknamed you Goose.
You accepted that with a smile
And remained carefree and loose.
You also met a girl named Joy
Who you dated for the next
Nine years of your life.
In 1983, you would make her your wife.
Well Goose, you’ve become quite a success.
For that, you should thank your good parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Louise Guess.
For your business sense,
You should know whom to thank.
‘Cause years of working for your Uncle James
Taught you to make enough dough to fill a bank.
Congratulations on it all –
Becoming a big-time accountant,
Making a lot of money,
Raising two fine sons with
Your high school honey.
Now go forth, Goose,
and enjoy year fifty-three.
See what’s out there
and clear the road for me.
‘Cause, as you well know,
I’m a-gaining on you.
Because just last April,
I turned fifty-two.
