Services for Van Layton Futrell, 66, of Murray, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Blalock Coleman and York Funeral Home in Murray. Brother Billy Sizemore will officiate. Entombment will follow with military honors in the Murray Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Mr. Futrell died at 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1,2012, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 3, 1945, in Model, Tenn., to the late Walter Almo (Dick) Futrell and Ruby (Henson) Futrell.

Mr. Futrell was a retired Lt. Colonel of the United States Army and was a farmer. He graduated from UT Martin and Murray State University and held a masters degree.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Grace Howard.

He is survived by two brothers, Bill Futrell of Fairdealing and Dempsey Futrell of Symsonia; three sons, Jon T. Futrell (and wife Kari) of Murray, Darby Futrell (and wife Heather) of Benton and Nathan Futrell (and wife Melissa) of North Carolina; six grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
