The two-possession difference in score came about thanks to a game-opening empty offensive drive and an untimely turnover by the Wildcats, Trigg head coach Coby Lewis said.
“We drove to the 3-yard line on the first series and got no points, and we fumbled on our own 5-yard line,” Lewis said. “We drove inside the red zone twice and didn’t score.”
Fort Campbell’s first scoring drive was a short one after a Luke McKenzie pass was intercepted, leaving the Falcons with possession at the Wildcat 38-yard line.
“That was one of the only bad passes Luke made all night,” Lewis said of McKenzie, who set a school record with 22 completions. “He really stepped up his game. He made some good reads, throwing the underneath ball when it was there and the deep ball, and he scrambled to make some plays and keep drives alive.”
