A Gracey resident was arrested early on Saturday morning after allegedly stabbing a Hopkinsville resident during a fight on Martindale Street in Cadiz.

Deonte Byers, 19, of Gracey, was arrested at 3:48 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Cadiz Police Department on a felony charge of first-degree assault, according to an arrest report by CPD Officer Michael Ayers.

The reported victim, Gary Barker Jr., 18, of Hopkinsville, came to the emergency room at Trigg County Hospital via private vehicle at about 1:25 a.m. that same morning, having been stabbed in the abdominal area during a fight that happened on Martindale Street a little after 1 a.m., the report said.

“Deonte Byers was placed on house arrest in Trigg County Circuit Court in June 2012 as a condition of bond reduction on charges of complicity to Robbery – Second Degree and complicity to Assault – 4th Degree stemming from a February 2012 arrest in Cadiz,” said CPD Officer Scott Brown.

Ayers wrote that he and other officers talked to several witnesses, who told them that Byers is the one who stabbed Barker, who in turn told the officers that he was trying to break up a fight when he was stabbed.
