Thursday’s middle school girls basketball game between Trigg County and Caldwell County will also serve as a fundraiser for Trigg County Relay for Life.

The Lady Midcats will host Ballin’ for a Cure as the seventh and eighth grade teams host the Lady Tigers beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Matt Wilder, in his first season as Lady Midcat coach, said he’s always wanted to organize an event similar to the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic that’s been held in men’s college basketball since 1995.

“I brought up the idea, and the girls and their parents jumped on it,” Wilder said. “I’ve always believed that, as a coach, you have a tool to teach life to your players. They need to know that it’s important to give back to their community. Athletic teams have to beg for money and sell stuff all the time for stuff we need, but rarely do you see, like at Trigg, a bunch of teams that give back. That’s what the community need to see and the girls need to learn, especially at a young age.”
