The loss leaves the Wildcats with a 5-6 record and ends their season in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs for the third consecutive year. It was also South Warren’s first-ever home playoff game and playoff victory, coming in the school’s third year and in the second season of varsity football for the Spartans.
Trigg head coach Coby Lewis said before the game that the ‘Cats had prepared to limit penalties, turnovers and other mistakes that had plagued the team much of the season.
“All the things we’d talked about wanting to fix, we did,” Lewis said. “Our kids did everything we asked them to there and played as close to a mistake-free game as we’ve played all year.”
Trigg faced 3rd-and-12 early in the drive but converted on a 16-yard run by Jayven Jones. A few plays later, the ‘Cats took a 7-0 lead on a 43-yard pass from Luke McKenzie to Quentin Bird.
The teams traded three-and-out series before South Warren lit the scoreboard for the first time on a 32-yard field goal by Andrew Upton early in the second quarter.
