Rex Booth grew up in Edmonson County. All of the true basketball historians out there know that Edmonson County was a small-class school that won the state basketball tournament in 1976. Rex’s father Barry was a part of that state championship effort. Rex himself played for Edmonson County as well, graduating in 2005. Rex received all-district honors in high school. After his high school career came to an end, he played three years at Lindsey Wilson College. He ran cross country there one year, also.
Rex began his coaching career fresh out of college. He coached one year at Glasgow under former University of Louisville star Jeff Hall. With just one year of experience, he then took the head job at Livingston Central. That was this past season. His team won the 5th District title in his only year there. Just last spring, Rex decided to apply at Trigg County High School. Rex was subsequently hired to teach high school math and be the top assistant in the boy’s basketball program. When asked what attracted him to Trigg County, Booth said, “I really liked the academic and athletic potential at Trigg County High School. I think the school system is moving in a positive direction and is on the road to success. I really like the people I have met. Trigg County just feels like home to me.”
A few personal notes about our new Coach Rex Booth. Rex majored in Math and Secondary Education in college. He is close to adding a degree in school counseling. Rex is engaged to be married in the near future as well. His fiancée is a Middle School Math major and already an assistant girls basketball coach at 1st Region power Marshall County. Rex says his hobbies are, and I quote, “Basketball, basketball and basketball.”
I can attest that young Coach Booth is definitely a student of the game and he has a keen appreciation for the history of the game that I do not see in most coaches his age.
If you see Coach Booth or cross his path, be sure and give him a big welcome to Trigg County.
OT: Next week my column will be “Jo Nell’s Table.”
