The Trigg County Board of Education, along with the four schools’ Site-Based Decision-Making Councils looked at ways to improve on their K-PREP scores when they met jointly Thursday night.

The new standards, called the Kentucky Core Academic Standards, are mandated by Senate Bill One, which was passed in 2009. The standards are measured by the K-PREP (Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress) exams.

The district as a whole and Trigg County Middle and High Schools were labeled “needs improvement” while Trigg County Intermediate was ranked “proficient.” The district missed the “proficient” ranking – 70 percent or above – by 0.3 points. Hamby said the new test is “much more rigorous.”

Hamby says that if they focus on the students and help them master the new standards, everything else will fall into place.

“We just need to keep in mind that it’s all about our kids, and doing something good for them,” Hamby said. “I trust that these scores are going to take care of themselves … As we work together, our councils and our board as a team … are going to surpass that proficiency benchmark next year.”
