Justice Bill Cunningham of the Kentucky Supreme Court talked Saturday morning about the difference between “sunshine patriots” and the real deal.

“What a sunshine patriot is, is somebody that’s a patriot of the United States, stands up for the United States, stands up for something when things are going well, when the sun is shining,” said Cunningham. “But when it starts raining, or it gets a little treacherous, they disappear.

Cunningham, a native of the area, was the guest speaker at the James Thomas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonel Stephen Trigg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution joint Christmas breakfast, held at the Lake Barkley State Resort Park Lodge.

Cunningham mentioned Kentucky’s “unique” oath of office, which requires you to swear that you’ve never participated in a duel. However, he said the most important part of that oath is the part that requires you to swear to uphold the Constitution, and he added that the Constitution and its amendments establish “liberty and justice for all.”
