Trigg County High School hosted the 2012 Kentucky Machine & Engineering

Christmas Classic basketball tournament Thursday through Saturday. The Wildcats won three of four contests, while the Lady ‘Cats lost three.

The Wildcats picked up a 79-53 win over Stewart County, Tenn. on Thursday before playing twice on Friday – a 77-72 win over Graves County and an 80-54 loss to Warren East – and topping Murray 80-68 on Saturday.

The biggest fireworks of the event came early Friday afternoon during Trigg’s win over Graves, a game that featured seven technical fouls – five on the Eagles and two on the ‘Cats. Trigg led by 13 points after the first quarter, nine at halftime and four after the third quarter before allowing Graves to take a six-point lead in the fourth.

The ‘Cats mounted a comeback and took the lead before the majority of the technicals were called, then extended the lead with free throws and held off another late Graves rally.

Trigg needed a big run to down Murray on Saturday. The ‘Cats trailed by six after the third quarter but outscored the Tigers 27-9 in the fourth to take the victory.

The Lady ‘Cats lost 59-18 to Heath on Thursday, 59-32 to Russellville on Friday and 52-33 to Lone Oak on Saturday.

In other action last week, the Wildcats lost 63-56 to Madisonville-North Hopkins last Tuesday. Both Trigg teams will return to action Jan. 4 when they host a 5th

District doubleheader against Lyon County.

Entering their break from action, the Wildcats hold a record of 8-3 and are in control of the district race with wins over Lyon, Crittenden County and Livingston Central. The Lady ‘Cats are winless in nine games. District tournament matchups will be set quickly, as after Trigg hosts Lyon, they will then face travel to Crittenden on Jan. 8 and Livingston on Jan. 11.
