W.J. Hopson died at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tenn.
He was born on July 20, 1925, in Cadiz to Winthrop Howell and Elizabeth Rice White Hopson.
Mr. Hopson was a United States Marine Corp. veteran serving during WWII. He retired as the owner of Cadiz Insurance Company. He served as mayor of Cadiz for 20 years, and served as a city councilman for many years.
He was a member of Cadiz Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Civitans, Cadiz Trigg County Chamber of Commerce where he had served as president.
He served on Pennyrile Area District Development where he had served as chairman, member of Murray State Alumni Association, where he had served as President, charter member of Cadiz Rotary Club for which the Annual Rotary Auction Breakfast is named W. J. Hopson Breakfast, there he also received the Paul Harris Fellow award.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marynell Hardin Hopson; and one brother, Winthrop H. Hopson.
He is survived by three daughters, Leanne King (and husband Garry) of Denton, Mont., Shara Hardy (and husband Bill) of Greensboro, N.C., and Madelyn Restersdorf (and husband Tim) of Spring Hill, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Margaret Futrell, William Scott Hardy, Jennifer Arenth, Mary Kulkarni, Brian Hardy, Henry, Ben and Will Retersdorf; seven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Hardy, Savannah Arenth, Jack Shimkin, Lily Hardy, Nathan Kulkarni, Benjamin Hardy and Luke Shimkin; and one sister-in-law, Celia Hopson of Cadiz.
