Gene Hughes was born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Model, Stewart County, Tenn., to the late J.Y. and Rena Chadwick-Hughes.
He was a United States Army veteran having served in WWII. Gene worked for 55 years as a union carpenter (local 90) and retied in 1989. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 265. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on his cattle farm.
Gene was preceded in death by one sister, Ovena Hargrove; and three brothers, Frank, John and Gillis Hughes.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Geneva Morris-Hughes of Evansville, Ind.; two sisters, Dorothy Winfield (and husband Billy) of Evansville, Ind. and Floy Ann Bess (and husband Seaby) of Dothan, Ala.; three children, Ronald David Hughes (and wife Sarah) of Evansville, Ind., Debbie Whiteside (and husband Ken) of Hopkinsville and Randy Hughes M.D. (and wife Tonya) of Fort Wayne, Ind.; six grandchildren, Jon Hughes, Shelley Brown, Vanessa Cornwell, Aaron Whiteside, Alex Hughes and Abigail Hughes; nine great-grandchildren, Jack, Bella and Bailey Hughes, Heidi Brown, Sophia and Logan Cornwell, Ethan, Addison and Kyliana Whiteside; and many nieces and nephews.
