Funeral services for Janice Higgs Johnson, 52, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Hopkinsville, were held on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the Freeman Chapel CME Church. Gamble Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Elder Calvin Johnson officiated. Burial followed in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West.

Janice Johnson died on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

She was born on March 17, 1960, to Hugh Mack Higgs and Mildred Burt Higgs.

Janice was a Retired Chief Yeoman of the United States Navy having served for 24 years. In 1994, she served as Secretariat to the Director in the Pentagon. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Kentucky University and was an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member.

She is survived by her husband, Calvin Johnson; two brothers, Michael Higgs of Hopkinsville and Gregory (and wife Aida) of Oxnard, Calif.; four sisters, Patricia Higgs (and husband Joe Rogers) of Cadiz, Gladys and Susan Higgs, both of Hopkinsville and Sharolyn Higgs (and husband Kenneth Lewis) of Laurel, Md.
