The Wildcats jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by as many as 11 points in the first half. The Trojans went on a 32-13 run that put them ahead 50-42, but the ‘Cats responded. Three-pointers by Cole Gardner and Dee Murphy helped cut the gap back to two points at the end of the third quarter.
Then, sandwiched around a Webster basket, Murphy hit a free throw, Gardner hit another three-pointer to tie the game, and a Deonquez Nance steal led to another Murphy basket to put Trigg back in the lead 60-58 with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter. The ‘Cats pushed the gap to five, leading 67-62 with 3:59 left after a Nance basket. Webster then scored six straight points. Nance put Trigg back in the lead at 69-68 with 3:14 left, but the Trojans scored 13 of the final 16 points of the game.
Nance led the way with 29 points, followed by Gardner with 17 and Murphy with 14.
Trigg shot a solid 48.3 percent from the field, but Webster’s 52.6 percent was boosted by an 18-for-25 (72 percent) performance in the second half. The ‘Cats went 2-for-4 from the free throw line, while the Trojans were 15-for-22.
