Trigg County Coroner John Mark Vinson says 30-year-old Cadiz resident David Shoaf, the driver in a Saturday, Dec. 8, accident that claimed his life and the lives of three youths on Rockcastle Road, was under the influence while driving a passenger van.

Vinson said his toxicology report showed that Shoaf had alcohol, Valium, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the active component in marijuana) and methamphetamine in his system. He went on to say that Shoaf had a BAC (blood alcohol content) of 0.085 but added that all drugs have different timetables for how long they stay in your system,

“Any one of these would have put Shoaf in violation of DUI (driving under the influence) laws,” said Vinson.

The toxicology report detected no drugs or alcohol in the other three victims – Kimberly Shafer, 18, Lindsey Sholar, 17, and Dalton McDougal, 19, said Vinson, who also said that because of the report, alcohol and drugs will be listed as a major contributing factor to the accident.

Officer Jay Thomas, spokesman for Post One of the Kentucky State Police, said the investigators are still waiting for the KSP Crime Lab’s toxicology report, but based on Vinson’s report, alcohol and drugs will be listed as the major contributing factors.
