The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has received two bids on the lagoon bridge at the west end of the U.S. 68/Ky. 80 Eggner Ferry Bridge, KyTC Spokesman Keith Todd said Monday morning.

“This project bridges over a lagoon on the Marshall County side of Kentucky Lake at Aurora,” said Todd.⌘“It includes construction of earthen causeways that will provide access to the mail lake so we can eventually bid and start work on the main river crossing.”

The engineer’s estimate of how much this project would cost is $29,424,228.78; Hickman-based Harold Coffey Construction Company, Inc., submitted a bid of $25,998,353.32, while Grand Rivers-based Jim Smith Contracting Company, LLC, submitted a bid of $24,212,491.14.

Although Jim Smith Contracting is the low bidder, the bid will be subject to review by a committee of engineers who will make sure the bid meets all of the project’s technical requirements, a process that normally takes about a week.

Todd says this is the first step in the process of replacing the current two-lane Eggner Ferry Bridge, which crosses Kentucky Lake, and its sister bridge across Lake Barkley, with four-lane bridges, and added that the construction of earthen causeways is expected to happen in the next year or two, with a construction time after that of about four or five years.
