The Wildcats struggled in the second quarter but dominated the rest of Friday’s 78-61 win over Lyon County in the 5th District Tournament Championship at Wildcat Gym.
“We went around the locker room and asked the seniors what the district championship meant to them,” Wright said. “They asked what it meant to me, and I said, ‘Absolutely everything.’”
Wright’s fifth career district title – four with the boys team (1995, ‘97, 2009 and ‘13) and won as girls head coach (1990) – came in his 16th season as boys head coach, which he indicated would be his last at the beginning of the school year.
His accomplishment wasn’t the only one of note Friday, as senior Deonquez Nance entered the game 31 points away from the all-time scoring lead at TCHS. He finished the night 12-for-19 from the field (2-for-6 from three-point range) and a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line for 32 points.
Trigg scored the first five points of the game and later used a 10-2 run to take the first double-digit lead of the night at 19-8.
Lyon fought back with a 20-8 stretch that was capped by a Brandon White three-pointer that put the Lyons ahead 28-27 with 2:28 left in the first half.
