When Cadiz man Paul Godwin attended the annual National Wild Turkey Federation Convention and Sport Show last month, he didn’t know he was going to receive the Roger M. Latham Sportsman Wild Turkey Service Award, but he was quite honored.

“It was a shock, they kept it pretty quiet … they even took the programs off the table,” Godwin said. “This is only one of five awards that are given out in the United States and Canada, so it’s kind of like winning the Oscar.”

The show was held Feb. 14 – 17 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn., where they were celebrating the NWTF’s 40th anniversary with the theme, “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.”

An NWTF press release describes Godwin as “a tireless advocate for conservation projects and outdoor youth programs” that has worked hard on conservation and youth programs throughout the state. It also said Godwin was instrumental in turning around the Barkley Lake NWTF chapter, making it one of the top chapters in the state.

Godwin took over as chapter president, banquet chairman, sponsor chairman and JAKES and Wheelin’ Sportsman coordinator for the Trigg County Longspurs, the release said.
