John has been working on his project since October of 2012, and completed it on Feb. 23. He led a team of eight, Daniel DeNeve, Mark DeNeve, Bryan DeNeve, Evan Culbertson, David Gerle, Brandon Gerle, Noah DeWeese, and Anthony Miliano to build and install the bat boxes at Hematite Lake. The bat boxes, which can house about 50 bats each, will provide a daytime roosting place for bats during the spring and summer.
Woodlands Nature Station School Program Coordinator, Aviva Yasgur, helped coordinate the Eagle Scout Project. She said, “This project will be very beneficial to Land Between The Lakes. Bats are our most significant predator of night insects like mosquitoes. One single little brown bat is able to eat up to 1000 mosquitoes per night, a fact that any outdoor enthusiast can appreciate!”
