WKDZ-FM was awarded the National Association of Broadcasters’ Crystal Radio Award on April 9 during the weeklong NAB Show held in Las Vegas.

It was the first such award for the station and its third time among the list of 50 finalists, with the others coming in 1999 and 2010. Ten winners are chosen each year for outstanding year-round commitment to community service.

General Manager Beth Mann, who was on hand to receive the award and called it “the top honor you can receive in the radio industry,” said WKDZ is the only small-market and locally-owned station to earn the award.

“A lot of trade publications have been writing about that because it’s normally small-market stations that are really geared toward community service,” Mann said.

Mann called her staff “an incredible team of individuals who come together” to serve the community, and she also credited the community for exhibiting a similar dedication to service.

“The community makes it happen,” Mann said. “It’s really their generosity that makes it appear that we’re as driven as we are. It’s a partnership, and I was really happy to bring the award to our staff, but even more proud to bring it home to our community.”
