Sixth grade students in Mike Wright’s social studies class got a taste last week of how money works, as they participated in a project called Mini Society.

“Mini Society is a program that we do with the sixth grade, but it can be done with any middle or high school group, and it is an economics unit,” Trigg County 4-H Youth Development Agent Janeen Tramble said. “They set up their own society. They have a flag, they have their own money that they develop.”

It helps teach about basic economic concepts like barter systems, monopolies, inflation, scarcity, supply and demand and competition, as many students will be selling the same types of items, said Wright. Tramble had a supply store if students didn’t have anything they could bring from home.

For example, if many students bring in cookies or cupcakes, they’ll have to lower their prices in order to compete, and conversely, if only one student brings in baked goods, they can charge more, Wright said.

“Any term you can think of that goes with economics is taught in this little society, it’s pretty cool. But the main thing is, the kids have fun, it’s hands-on learning,” Wright said.
