Trigg County’s three pairs each finished in the top 20 in last weekend’s state fishing championship.

Hosted by Kenlake State Resort Park in Aurora, it was the first-ever state fishing tournament sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. The two-day event started Friday, and each pair weighed their best five bass each day, with teams ranked by combined weight Saturday.

Mason Shelton and Austin Greene teamed for Trigg’s top finish, taking fifth place with a two-day total of 29 pounds, 9 ounces. The pair finished the first day in 10th place.

“With the rising water, many of the shallow bays were filled with tournament boats,” Trigg head coach Scott Schrock said. “Mason and Austin fished with boat captain James Shelton and tried to find some fish that others were overlooking. This technique worked for them, and they were able to find success where no other boats were fishing.”

Trigg’s second pair, Adam Fitch and Hunter Allen, teamed to take 14th place, catching a total of eight fish at 24-5.

“After a disappointing first day of only three fish for 7-5, they improved with the second biggest bag of fish in the tournament with a five-fish limit of 17 pounds on day two,” Schrock said.
