City reaches settlement ‘outdated’ concealed weapons ordinance

The Cadiz City Council, at their meeting last Tuesday evening, agreed to a $1,327.68 settlement with the Kentucky Concealed Carry Coalition over a proposed ordinance that establishes where concealed weapons are and aren’t allowed.

After a brief closed session, and after no public debate, City Council members voted 5 – 0, with Cadiz City Council member Manuel Brown absent, to accept the settlement, after which a first reading of the proposed ordinance was held. It won’t take effect unless it’s passed on second reading at the City Council’s Tuesday, June 4, meeting at 6 p.m. in Cadiz City Hall.

Much of the three-page ordinance is crossed out. Language that isn’t crossed out states that except as stated in KRS (Kentucky Revised Statute) 527.020, no one with a concealed carry permit can bring a concealed weapon in a building or a part of a building owned, leased or controlled by the City. There are no criminal penalties, however, people can violating the ordinance can be denied entrance or forced to leave.

The ordinance specifically exempts public housing, highway rest areas, firing ranges and private buildings owned, leased, or controlled by the City.
