Earlier this week, I had lunch with Trigg County’s newly appointed high school boys basketball coach Payton Croft. One thing was apparent as soon as Coach Croft got out of his car – e is proud to be a Wildcat. Croft was wearing a never-before-seen Trigg County basketball shirt and a huge smile on his face.

The next thing that was apparent is that he is here to work.

I’ve known of Payton for about two years now but have only known him on a personal level for about two or three months. Not only does he want to work, he makes kids want to work. I went to Coach Croft’s opening meeting with players when he first got the job, and I can tell you that he had me wanting to suit up for the Wildcats; believe me, I’m much better suited for leading the Black Hole. Coach Croft spoke of senior three-point marksman and my best friend, Cole Gardner – he said, “Cole has always and will always be one of the best shooters in west Kentucky, but this summer he’s really tried to expand his game, and I’m really excited to see how much his game improves by this season.”

The Wildcats have already wrapped up their summer league schedule with an impressive 8-4 record against very tough competition. Croft brings to the coaching staff his father, who brings some 30-odd years of 5th District coaching experience and a very keen eye for the game of basketball. I asked Coach Croft how they were going to build on last season, where the Wildcats were a three-point third quarter away from being in the 2nd Region championship against Croft’s former Hopkinsville Tigers. He is excited to build on a steady foundation and a rocking fan base.

Croft loves the game of basketball and really loves helping young people. If you haven’t been to a Wildcat game in the last few years, I have a feeling this is going to be a year you don’t want to miss. Croft will have a fun and exciting group of Wildcats on the floor to defend their 5th District title. If you happen to run into Coach Croft or his father out in Cadiz, make sure you stop and say “hello.” I’m sure he’d love to meet some of his Wildcats’ fans.

GO CATS!
