Woven tapestries by Diana Wicai are on exhibit at the Janice Mason Art Museum, in an exhibit titled Weaving Over the Line: Fiber Art by Diana Wicai, which on view through Friday, Aug. 30.

Wicai, a Murray State Univerity alum, has been weaving for roughly 20 years. At the opening on Wednesday, Juy 17, she said that while at MSU, she took a weaving class that was held at night “on a dare.”

The teacher told her she wasn’t doing it right. “And 20 years later, I’m still doing it wrong,” she said with a laugh.

She tries not to keep too much of her own work at her house, since space is at a premium and like many artists she will trade her art for other things, including a lawnmower recently. Wicai, who received a bachelor’s degree in fine art from MSU, works and resides in New Concord, Ky.

She is known for the impressive size and vibrant color of her woven tapestry wall hangings, but also enjoys experimenting with technique and medium to design dresses, purses, and other fiber pieces. Weaving Over the Line features several beautiful tapestries as well as a sampling of Wicai’s other work.
