Mr. Sumner retired as a press room operator for Johnson Controls after being employed 33 years. He was a member of Liberty Point Baptist Church, served in the US Army during the Berlin Crisis and was a member of the American Legion Post 74, where he served on the Pennyrile Honor Guard providing military funeral honors for deceased veterans.
Survivors include step-daughter and her husband Jennifer and Ernie Baker of Cadiz; step-son and his wife Donnie and Shelia Holland of Cadiz; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Linda Sumner of Cadiz, Jessie C. and Margaret Sumner of Cadiz and Charles Thomas Sumner, Chicago, Ill.; two sisters and brother-in-law- Carolyn Ann Sumner of Cadiz and Marilyn and Richard Hart of Cadiz; special friend Grace Johnson of Cadiz; three step-grandchildren, John Holland, Darla Thomas and Amanda Baker; two step-great grandchildren, Colson Thomas and Kaylee Holland.
His parents were William Odell Sumner and Ruby Cameron Sumner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Holland Sumner, and brother, Donald Ray Sumner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Goodwin Funeral Home. The Revs. Irvin Darnall and Paul Cannon will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow at East End Cemetery in Cadiz.
