Am I writing a book? Maybe; And Coach’s Corner has a new home

I’m currently attempting to cultivate a work of fiction. Not this column, mind you, or anything in this newspaper, lest you doubt the veracity of what you read in The Cadiz Record each week.

No, it’s something I’ve had floating around in my head for a while. I’ll spare you any spoilers just in case I manage to get it finished and/or released for public consumption.

Don’t hold your breath. This isn’t the first time I’ve tried to write a fiction story. It is, however, the first time that I feel like I’ve stumbled upon something that I might be able to develop into more than an idea.

On those rare occasions during which I have a moment to think and/or breathe, I might peck away at it for a while. Those occasions are so rare, though, that there’s no telling how long it might take to get an entire story written or even if the quality will be such that it’s worth reading at all.

Time is part of my frustration. Timing is another. And yes, there’s a difference.

It’s not rare for humans to encounter some of their best ideas at the most inopportune moments. For me, some of my best literary ideas have occurred to me when I’m trying to go to sleep. If I were physically capable of typing in the 10-15 minutes I lie awake before drifting off, I might have written a series of novels by now.

How cheap is good voice recognition software these days?

The particular story I’m working on is based loosely on a true event, though the majority of it has so far been filled with the creation of characters who can play off of that event. In truth, I don’t even know what the message or point of the story is yet. All I know is that this thing happened, and I think it would make for an interesting story. Where it goes from there remains to be seen.

I’m writing this column because I feel like revealing that I’m working on a piece of fiction might actually force me to continue working on it to completion.

Readers will notice a minor change to The Cadiz Record on this very page, and it did not come without a little arm-wringing.

Starting this week, Mike Wright’s “Coach’s Corner” column will be featured on this page. After a few years on in the Sports section, I felt it was time to move the column here.

Why? For one, it’s a popular regular feature, and it helps fill his page better than the previous solution, which was an editorial cartoon that was much larger than it needed to be most weeks.

The other reason is the subject matter of the column. Before he retired recently, Coach Wright’s column was regularly more based in sports. Lately, it’s drifted more to general public interest, which isn’t quite as good of a fit in the Sports section.

Coach was hesitant about the move – at least I think he was. You’ll have to ask him if he was being sarcastic or not.

In the end, it’s a minor change that I think our readers – and at least one of our writers – will soon become accustomed to.
