The Lady Wildcats, after five consecutive runner-up finishes, topped Lyon County 4-1 Thursday in the 5th District Tournament championship game at the Trigg County Recreation Complex. The win advanced both teams to the region tournament, where Trigg was set to play Webster County on Tuesday at Madisonville-North Hopkins (results unavailable at press time). The winner faces a Wednesday match against Tuesday’s winner between Hopkinsville and Caldwell County, and the championship will be played Thursday.
Hannah Futrell led the charge for Trigg’s offense with two goals and an assist, and Brittany Shafer and Jaycie Sittig added goals for the Lady ‘Cats. Trigg’s defense, led by goalkeeper Natalie Crane, held Lyon to a single goal by Jill P’Poole.
“It’s amazing to see them finally win a district championship,” Trigg head coach Rosebud Hodges said. “This team plays together, laugh together, have fun together – they are a true team, and they deserve it.”
