“The win validated everything we’ve been doing to prepare for this season,” first-year head coach Russell Malone said. “Dawson Springs defeated us twice last season, so we knew going in that it could be a tough game. But we also felt very confident in the work that we’d put in. It gives us a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season.”
Trigg led 31-13 at halftime thanks in large part to a suffocating 1-3-1 defense that forced 39 turnovers on the night.
“My philosophy is that we’ll give maximum effort the entire game, and any team I coach will give great effort defensively because, ultimately, you have to stop the other team from scoring,” Malone said. “We, as coaches, probably work on offense way too much sometimes, but what it boils down to is offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships. We’ve still got work to do with our defense, but we’re very proud of the effort.”
