Substitute teachers and other variable-hour employees of the Trigg County School District will see their hours limited, a change school officials attribute to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare.

At their first meeting of the new year, members of the Trigg County Board of Education heard first readings of several revised policies that will limit substitute teachers and other variable-hour employees to a maximum of 129 working hours per month, or 32.25 hours a week.

Trigg County School Superintendent Travis Hamby said that under the law, which was passed in 2010 but took effect on Oct. 1, the board is required to provide health insurance to employees who work an average of at least 130 hours per month.

“That’s something that we have to control,” said Hamby. “If we don’t control that, then we end up providing, we tap into statewide funds that are used to fund SEEK. So, if we don’t control those numbers, then we could potentially add a great deal more people to health insurance benefits.”
