Trigg County High School’s girls basketball season ended Monday with a 64-38 loss to Lyon County in the 5th District Tournament semifinals at Crittenden County.

In head coach Russell Malone’s first year, the Lady Wildcats finished the season with a record of 7-17, six wins better than last year.

Against the Lady Lyons, Trigg dictated the pace early in the first half and were within five points at 13-8 after a second-quarter basket by Mallory Mize.

“Our game plan was to milk some clock,” Malone said. “We weren’t trying to hold it for the entire game, but I told the girls if they could get it within 10 points with four minutes to go, we could get a ‘W.’ But when you’re the fourth seed and they’re the first seed, there’s a reason. They have a very good team, and we knew we’d have to take a gamble and see if they’d have an off night.”

From there, though, Lyon went on a 26-3 run to push the gap to 28 points at 39-11.
