The Wildcats, the tournament’s top seed, earned a pair of regular-season wins over the No. 2 Rockets – 67-57 on Dec. 31 in Marion (a game Trigg led by 19 points in the fourth quarter) and 57-48 on Jan. 17 in Cadiz (a game Trigg trailed late in until the 2:08 mark of the fourth quarter).
This marks the first time since 2006-07 that Trigg has won back-to-back district championships.
“At bigger schools, the district tournament might not mean as much to them because they’re focused on a region championship,” first-year Trigg head coach Payton Croft said. “For small schools, the district means a ton.”
Friday’s game was played within an eight-point window until Trigg pulled away in the final minute of overtime. The score was tied five times, and the lead changed hands seven times.
