A memorial service for Carole K. Gardner Nikaido, 73, of Deerfield, Ill., formerly of Cadiz, will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Cadiz. The Rev. Kenny Rogers will officiate. A joint committal service will follow at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2014, for Minoru “Nick” and Carole K. Nikaido at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville. Goodwin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Carole K. Nikaido passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Whitehall Rehabilitation Center in Deerfield, Ill.

Carole was a graduate of Deaconese Nursing School in Evansville, Ind. After graduation, she worked for the University of Kentucky Medical Center for several years before moving to Maui, Hawaii, in 1970. She worked there for 20 years as a mental health nurse and retired after working another five years as a school nurse.

In 1970, Carole met and married Minoru “Nick” Nikaido. They lived on the island of Maui until 2001 when they moved to Cadiz, where they resided until Nick’s death in 2012. Carole was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Cadiz Lions Club, NARFE and the VFW Auxiliary Post No. 1913. Carole was the life of the party to all those around her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Minoru “Nick” Nikaido; and her parents, James Kessner and Ruth Ellen Gardner.

Carole is survived by one sister, Mary Elaine Gardner (and husband Charles Whittle) of Kamuela, Hawaii; two daughters, Noelle Sim (and husband Ivan) of Westlake, Ohio and Nicole Nikaido of San Mateo, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Scott and Sailor Sim.
