Shelton, Oliver runners-up in state fishing championship

Trigg County High School placed three boats in the top 20 of last weekend’s KHSAA Bass Fishing State Championship, including runners-up Mason Shelton and Drake Oliver.

Shelton and Oliver led after the first day of competition Friday on Kentucky Lake. They caught five fish for a total of 18 pounds, 9 ounces and led by more than two pounds. They caught five again on Saturday for a total weight of 13-10 and a final total of 32-3, falling 1 pound, 3 ounces behind Cameron Brooks and Chase Geary of Muhlenberg County.

Trigg’s other pairs were 1st Region champs Douglas Colson and Zack Colbert, who finished seventh (12-4 Friday, 14-13 Saturday, 27-1 total), and Austin Greene and Skylar Pool, who finished 20th (8-8 total).

A total of 46 boats competed in the tournament, which was hosted at Kentucky Dam Marina in Gilbertsville.
