Work on the Southern Kentucky Independent Theatre (SKIT) production of “Shrek: The Musical” is coming along nicely, director Portia Ezell said last week.

“It is developing into a very nice production,” said Paul Fourshee, the man in charge of building the sets.

Ezell said they got an early and fortunate head start on preparations for this musical, which is good because there are challenges involved that haven’t been involved with the group’s typical summer musicals.

Sets, costumes, makeup, music and other aspects have been uniquely challenging for the cast and crew. Ezell said several of the actors are playing two, three or even four different parts, which means many more costume changes.

In terms of makeup, Ezell said they’re working with makeup and prosthetics they haven’t worked with before. There won’t be live music this year, as the songs differ so sharply in style, so they’ll use pre-recorded music instead, she added.
