A new flagpole and flag were dedicated Saturday afternoon at the Seven Friends Memorial on Canton Road, and family and friends of those who died and others gathered there.

Linda Caldwell presented the flag and flagpole to the monument and the families on behalf of Chapter No. 20 of the Woodmen of the World Fraternal Life Insurance Society, and Jessie Sumner and some local youths raised the flag.

Caldwell said she was proud to represent the Woodmen of the World, which donates supplies and flags to a variety of local places. She also said she and the group believe the flag and flagpole they presented are about giving back to this community.

“In promoting patriotism, our organization believes that the principle of love of country is our duty. So if we think about it, if we love our country, it should follow that we love our neighbors, because it is our neighbors who make up this great country,” Caldwell said. “That is why Woodmen believes in giving back to the community.”
